Before you start your trip to Uganda, you should make sure that you are protected against certain diseases. Here is an overview of the recommended vaccinations.

Standard vaccinations

Make sure your routine vaccinations are up to date according to the RKI vaccination calendar. This includes vaccinations against:

  • Tetanus
  • Diphtheria
  • Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR)

Travel-specific vaccinations

For a trip to Uganda, specific vaccinations are recommended to protect your health:

  • Yellow fever
  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Typhoid fever
  • Rabies
  • Meningococcal meningitis

Yellow fever vaccination

The yellow fever vaccination is one of the most important and mandatory vaccinations for entry into Uganda. This vaccination protects you against the yellow fever virus, a potentially fatal disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes.

To enter Uganda, you must present valid proof of yellow fever vaccination. The vaccination must be given at least 10 days before your entry to be effective and to meet the requirements of the Ugandan immigration authorities.

Make sure you always carry your vaccination certificate with you as it will be checked on entry. Without a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate, you may be refused entry to Uganda and there is a risk that you will be quarantined.

By being vaccinated against yellow fever, you are not only protecting your own health, but also helping to prevent the spread of this dangerous disease. Therefore, plan your visit to the doctor in good time to get this important vaccination.

In addition to the obligatory yellow fever vaccination, there are other vaccinations that are recommended for a trip to Uganda in order to protect your health in the best possible way.

Hepatitis A and B

Hepatitis A: This vaccination protects against liver inflammation, which is transmitted through the consumption of contaminated food or water. Hepatitis A is common in many African countries and the vaccination provides effective protection.

Hepatitis B: Transmission occurs mainly through contact with infected blood and other body fluids. Vaccination is particularly recommended if you have close contact with the local population or are considering medical treatment in Uganda.

Typhoid fever

Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection that is transmitted through contaminated water and food. There is an increased risk, particularly in rural areas with limited hygiene facilities. The typhoid vaccination offers important protection and is recommended for all travelers to Uganda.

Rabies

Rabies is transmitted through the bite of infected animals such as dogs, monkeys or bats. The rabies vaccination is particularly important for travelers who may spend a lot of time in rural areas or have close contact with animals. Although the vaccination is not mandatory, it can be life-saving as rabies is almost always fatal if untreated.

Meningococcal meningitis

Meningococcal meningitis is a bacterial infection that affects the brain and spinal cord. Vaccination is particularly recommended during the dry season when the transmission rate is higher. This vaccination is particularly important for travelers who are in large crowds or traveling in the northern regions of Uganda.

Vaccination schedule and preparation

Thorough planning and timely preparation of your vaccinations are crucial for a healthy and safe trip to Uganda. Here are some important points to keep in mind.

Timing

Ideally, start your vaccination preparations a few weeks to months before your departure. Some vaccinations require multiple doses over a period of time to ensure full protection. Therefore, allow sufficient time to complete all necessary vaccinations in good time.

  • Yellow fever: The vaccination must be given at least 10 days before entry.
  • Hepatitis A and B: These vaccinations are administered in a series of injections. The first dose should be administered as early as possible, followed by further doses according to a set schedule.
  • Typhoid: This vaccination can be administered as a single dose at least two weeks before the trip.
  • Rabies: The rabies vaccination requires several doses over a period of about one month.
  • Meningococcal meningitis: This vaccination should be administered a few weeks before departure.

Doctor's visit and advice

Consult a doctor or travel medicine specialist in good time to draw up an individual vaccination plan. Your doctor can also give you further health advice that is specifically tailored to your trip to Uganda. Inform your doctor about your itinerary, planned activities and the duration of your stay so that he or she can recommend the appropriate vaccinations and precautions.

Additional health tips

In addition to vaccinations, there are other important measures to protect your health during your trip.

Malaria prophylaxis

Uganda is a malaria area, so you should take malaria prophylaxis and take measures to ward off mosquitoes, such as wearing long-sleeved clothing and using insect repellent.

Hygiene

Observe good hygiene practices to avoid diarrheal diseases. Drink only bottled or boiled water and avoid raw or undercooked food.

Medication supply

Make sure that you carry sufficient quantities of all necessary medication that you take regularly. It can also be helpful to put together a first-aid kit with basic medicines and first aid items.
