The Canopy Walk is one of the highlights when visiting the Nyungwe Nationalpark in Rwanda. Suspended above a gorge in the lush mountain rainforest of Nyungwe National Park, the footbridge offers a breathtaking perspective of ancient treetops and wildlife. Approximately 160 meters long and 70 meters high, the suspension bridge is accessible as part of a guided tour on the Igishigishigi trail or for hikers on the Imbaraga or Umuyove trails. Opened in 2010, it is the only one of its kind in East Africa and the third in all of Africa.

Nyungwe Forest is the largest protected mountain rainforest in Africa and has a huge diversity of species. On the approximately one-hour walk that starts from the Uwinka Tourist Center and leads to the jetty, visitors can see countless butterflies, orchids and colourful birds, many of which are endemic to the region.

Thirteen species of primates live in Nyungwe Forest. So encounters with them are not impossible.

The steep forested slopes have well-maintained trails, but they can get muddy, especially after rains.

General climate in Rwanda Rwanda is located in the heart of Africa, just a few degrees south of the equator, which gives the country a temperate tropical climate all year round. Despite its proximity to the equator, the climate in Rwanda is pleasant and not extremely hot due to the country's altitude. Most regions of Rwanda are between 1,000 and 2,000 meter above sea level, which results in cooler temperatures than you would expect in equatorial areas. The climate in Rwanda can be roughly divided into two main seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. The dry season runs from June to Sep...

Mountain GorillasOverview The majestic mountain gorillas, a subspecies of the Eastern Gorilla, are among the most fascinating animals travelers can encounter in Rwanda. Weighing up to 440 pounds, male silverbacks are the largest living primates. Their thick, black fur helps protect them from the cooler temperatures of the high-altitude regions. The silver-gray patch on the backs of mature males gives them their name, “silverbacks.” With their powerful physique and complex social structures, mountain gorillas are a symbol of conservation in Rwanda, attracting visitors from around the globe.Hab...
